An X marks the spot a place where there’s hidden treasure. An X is
something that used to be that’s now become something else. An X is a
kiss a love token. An X is a choice what you believe in, who you are,
that you are. An X is a simple mark on a piece of paper... that can
change the course of history.

From treasure maps to ballot boxes, one simple letter, tucked away at
the end of the alphabet, holds so much meaning and power. Our democracy
bench would be a bold simple statement in the middle of the park, two
solid dark wooden beams crossing each other. From a distance, you see it
as a clear, graphic X, contrasting with the flowing forms of the gardens
around it. As you get closer you realise that it’s covered in a mesh of
words engraved into its surface. These words will be the story of the
letter X, an intriguing and engaging exploration of how it has come to
stand for so much.

The X is not only at the heart of democracy, but also a reference to the
past lives of the park within which it lies this park is a reclaimed
space; it is simultaneously excanal, ex bombsite, extenement,
exgingerbeerfactory. The X acknowledges this transformation,
celebrates the past and future, and as such would be made from reclaimed
timber sourced from within the park.
