For democracy to work well, the people who are elected to represent their constituents must truly understand the issues and needs of the group they are speaking for.
They need to have a heart for the people, so my starting point was the shape of a heart.
I thought through how to use the shape of a heart in the design. How would it sit on the ground and what way around should it go? When thinking about the ground I realised that this could symbolise people, as we all belong to a locality which is definded by where on the earth we stay.
To convey my idea of good democracy I thought that if half the heart was under the ground this would show that the democratically elected person is part of and understands the needs of his constituants. The half above the earth is reaching out in his elect role, speaking with those are also functioning in the same way for their people. In connecting they are able to find solutions for common problems and also receive the benifits of working with others.

This site is for gathering proposals for a 'democracy bench', and for an online jury of 180 people to vote on it. The winning proposal gets £1800 to make it happen.
