Conversation Bench, Terrazzo, Classic Bianco finish
This piece expores a dialogue between manufacturing processes and
sculptural form. A CAD/CAM programme was written based on my maquette,
and a prototype was produced in mdf (on a CNC 3 axis router bed) with a
view to producing an edition in resistant materials; natural and
composite. The first production piece is produced in cast terrazzo. It
is envisaged that for a public setting, the CNC programme could be
adjusted to realise bench forms of greater dimensions.
I am drawn to the possibilities of combining sculptural form with
manufacturing processes, both traditional and digital. Elegant
simplicity of form and the use of appropriate materials are essential
concerns in my work. My stone carving and ceramics use traditional
methods and attempt to create work which is both contemporary in feel
yet reaches back to an ancient heritage.
