Now We Are Talking
Valid point about 1/5 of a seat each. Lets hope we can make these large enough to squeeze 5 left bumcheeks onto (and then balance precariously)

Hello genkitm and destrin. glad you like my idea. i created this design especially for this commission, in direct response to the brief, so its as much your idea as mine. I have sent my sketches to an outdoor furniture designer who makes things out of green oak, to see if he can make this for your budget, though i have to say that in terms of materials, construction and finishes my proposal would be a professionally craftsmen built piece at the affordable end of the ideas presented on this website. As this design would be executed by professional designers and makers, the cost would include a guarantee of design and workmanship which indemnifies you against anything going wrong and increases your chances of being allowed to install the finished piece in the public domain. Also inclusive to the costs would be my proven advice and experience - the last permanent outdoor piece I built was 6 metres tall and 18 metres in diameter and took 4 years of negotiation to obtain permission to erect it. Finally, note that my costings will also include ground work to foundations and fixings as this is an integral part of my design. These 'hidden' costs (i.e. public liability/professional indemnity, concrete for foundations, etc) may not be allowed for in the costs provided by others, so i would advise that you examine all cost estimates provided very carefully before using them as a basis to make a decision. best of luck with this wonderful project. vote wisely! john kennedy, landlab

This flexible design creates a space to encourage democracy and much more. You could quite easily imagine an open air debate, class or show taking place at the centre of these benches. Plus we all get one fifth of a seat each

Pillars of Democracy
Hi, this idea was my proposal. The materials cost for each 'renewal' is very low- perhaps £50 for the whole group. The greatest expense would be the administration each time; organising a date, ok-ing the health & safety of it, supervision on the day, etc. The intention was to design the renewal process so that a very broad range of school and community groups could benefit from it, hence the flexibility and scope for imagination built into it. In this way, the number of groups likely to want to take part is as large of possible (so there's no shortage of interest) but also the groups it would appeal to would be exactly those most likely to already have such administrative capacity 'in house'. The 'renewal' aspect of the idea does require a commitment over time, though the responsibility is passed like a chain, rather than resting forevermore with one body, so the expense to any one group is very limited (and the benefits substantial!). A large part of the idea for the bench was for the renewal process, together with the photos posted on the website each time, to serve as a powerful reminder to anyone taking part in subsequent years that they are building on and contributing to a process that has developed over time- just like democracy!

The Blueprint Bench
Good-looking bench, and I like the concept behind it, but it might be difficult to maintain as it needs renewal every 1 or 2 years and therefore more money to keep it going.

This would get my vote in an instant if we confirm it can come in under budget, it appears very conceptual at the moment so I don't know if further investigation has yet happened?

This is a beautiful idea and completely fits the site; I love the way the blue tiles reflect the Islamic pond in Chumleigh Park. The tree shape reminds me of my favourite bench at school, which invited cosy conversation, but also gives people space to be, and think. The blueprint technology is so simple and so effective; I think it would be a wonderful project for kids to be involved with – really fun and with a lot to give them to think about: what mark they want to make and what they want to say.

Brilliant idea. A bench with a meaning and purpose. Whilst promoting democracy and friendship between peoples, it also exposes the genocide and anti-democratic practices of the Israeli apartheid regime and its supporters. This is a bench which could help make a difference. Gordon

Rubble bench
fantistic! this is the most playful interpretation of the brief. the object fosters interaction between strangers and perhaps collaboration to make it bounce. i can imagine this enabling people to share something joyful. this is the heart of democracy. it gets my vote.

Bench with a Twist
Out of all the people that have submitted ideas I think that Les seems to have the best understanding of the Who Wants to Be ethos and has some interesting ideas in his proposal. I especially like the idea of using stone from a building that in theory was very democratic in itelf. Les do you have an idea of how large the bench would be, how many seats would be involved or how many people coud be seated?

I think this is a really cool idea. Fun, flexible and fitting to the theme. Has the designer been able to come up with a more thorough costing plan?

I too think this is an interesting and fun idea but have concerns over it's durability. How easy would it be to mend should the mechanism break?

"SIT DOWN AND BE COUNTED"
I like this idea a lot but there is something American looking about the colours - perhaps it's just me, but the blue/red thing might seem a little out of place in a park.

Bench with a Twist
I think this is great and doesn't seem as earnest as some of the other submissions. Of course democracy is serious - but the evening we went to was also fun and I'd like the bench to reflect this.

"SIT DOWN AND BE COUNTED"
Out of all of the submissions, this one has the most actual seats, which I think is relevant for the number of people who contributed to the benches founding. I would be surprised if we could get a bench that would seat all £200 of us but 36 is closer than some of the other proposals, plus it could be added to over time by the council perhaps?

Pillars of Democracy
This is an awesome idea, especially if this can be positioned as the brief suggests with the two seats providing a contrasting view.
