The Democracy Bench

On the 7th November 2008, 200 people paid £10 each, and gathered in the Unicorn Theatre, London Bridge, to decide what to do with £2000 of their box office takings in a game of Who Wants to Be...? - the 'ask the audience' game show.

After 2 hours of proposing, discussing and voting on ideas, they decided to commission a designer to create a 'democracy bench', to be placed (if possible) in a London park. We sent out a call for proposals. This website is the result. Massive thanks are due to audience member and our wonderful friend Salim Virani for developing and theming this site with us!

The brief was simple: we're looking for a bench design that encourages and/or celebrates democracy, and costs £1800 including fabrication and fees. In fact, it might cost a little more than that - so do bear in mind, when judging, that the more expensive the bench, the longer it might take us to fund-raise to get it made.

What you see on this site are submissions made by artists and designers. Please vote on them and discuss them, the top voted bench on the 5th April will be the winner!
